From Fresh to Salt

Transitioning from freshwater to marine reefkeeping is an exciting journey. While many principles remain the same, the ocean requires a slightly different approach to stability and chemistry.

The Main Differences

  • Salinity: You'll need to manage salt levels (Specific Gravity) using a refractometer.

  • Stability: Marine ecosystems are more sensitive to change. Slow and steady wins the race.

  • Flow: Corals need high, turbulent water movement (wavemakers) to survive, not just bubbles.

  • Chemistry: You'll monitor Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium alongside Nitrates.

Basic Setup Needs

Marine Salt
Refractometer
Wavemakers
Protein Skimmer
RODI Water
Stronger Lighting

* You can often reuse your freshwater tank itself, provided it hasn't been treated with copper medications.
